Heidi comes from a family of educators and has always dreamed of following in her grandparents’ footsteps ever since she was a little girl. She can remember playing school in her basement and teaching her pretend students basic math and reading skills on her little chalkboard that hung on the wall. In 2004, she fulfilled her dream and entered the teaching profession after receiving her B.S. Ed from California University of Pennsylvania. After teaching 4th grade in Virginia for 3 years, she and her husband decided to move back home to the Pittsburgh area so they would be closer to family now that their first child was born. That fall, she was hired as a literacy coach by the West Mifflin Area School District and continued her own education by pursuing and obtaining her Masters of Science degree at California University of Pennsylvania in Reading. After 1 year as a literacy coach, she transitioned into a Title I role where she discovered her true passion in life, that of teaching reading and sharing the gift of literacy with others. She assisted the district in restructuring their program and helped colleagues use the science of teaching reading to make data driven decisions so that all students made progress towards their individual reading goals. While in this role, this is when Heidi first realized that someday, when the timing was right, she would love to pursue a career as an educational consultant.
After teaching Title I for a few years, she transitioned into the classroom where she spent several more years primarily at the elementary and early childhood levels. After 16 years of public education, she decided it was time to transition out of the classroom. She joined the SBSL team in 2021 to continue her passion for helping others grow their knowledge of the science of teaching reading as lifelong learners. Heidi believes that literacy is the gateway to success and that one’s education is something that can never be taken away. One of her favorite quotes is by Dr. Seuss, "The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you'll go."
Heidi is a proud wife and mom of two beautiful girls that keep life very busy when she’s not working. If she’s not on the sidelines of the soccer field then she’s poolside cheering her girls on during their swim meet or in the stands supporting the high school marching band in which her oldest plays trumpet. In addition to her girls, she also has two Boston Terriers, Pippa and Tino, that are very much a part of the family. They bring lots of love, joy, and laughter every day to their home. Heidi enjoys spending time with her family, walking her dogs, traveling, and most of all reading a good book with her chair in the sand along the shores of the beach. Some day she and her husband hope to retire there.
